Wendy A. McCaffery
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS)
Wendy enjoys helping clients cultivate self-acceptance and healing. Drawing upon models including Buddhist psychology, psychoanalytic theory and feminist theory, she creates a compassionate environment, inviting clients to investigate their minds with curiosity, openness and acceptance. In doing so, clients can connect to their authentic selves and begin to develop a gentle inner voice and a more humane way of relating to themselves and others for optimal growth and healing.
Through the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science Wendy studied how to apply and teach contemplative, concentrative and mindfulness meditation techniques in order to repair ruptures in relationships to self and others. While working at the Renfrew Center, she provided care to women and teens who faced eating disorder related symptomatology including: distorted body image, bingeing, purging, restricting, over-exercising, food phobias, food rituals, OCD, and “all or nothing” thinking around food, weight and their bodies.
Wendy has intensive training in working with men and women who struggle specifically with emotional eating, bingeing, and compulsive overeating. Through UCSD's Center for Mindfulness, she completed the Mindful Eating Conscious Living program (http://www.me-cl.com) which prepares clinicians to treat emotional eating from a mind/body perspective. Wendy also incorporates interpersonal psychoanalytic theory into eating disorder treatment based on her training at the William Alanson White Institute's program for Eating Disorders, Compulsions, and Addictions.
Wendy holds her Master's Degree in Social Work from Fordham University, and prior to working in private practice, she held clinical positions serving the needs of eating disorder patients, the elderly, HIV positive clients, trauma survivors, and people who struggle with addiction. Additionally, Wendy obtained credentials by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Foundation as a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, in order to strengthen her expertise in effectively treating the needs of men and women who experience disordered eating and distorted body image.
